i watched the fires of pompeii episode right after seeing the special, i wonder if they're going to link that episode in some way

The answer is no. No way. 6th Doctor was in an episode as another character before he was the Doctor and that never happened. So no. I think it's even officially been said as no.

yeah they did a half hour special on BBC of the unveiling for the new Doctor, which is Peter Capaldi. he's an older looking guy which is a little iffy for me seeing as the last 3 Doctors have and look really young. i dont know much about him, but a lot of people are happy about this so, ill make my judgment when i see him in action as the new Doctor.

I really wanted them to go older because some of the earlier doctors were also older. He's about the age of the 1st. More importantly he's a great actor and a really cool guy. He was in a punk band with Craig Ferguson. Also he's a huge fan of the show. At 55 he was 5 years old when the original show started which put him in the right demographic because it started as a kids show so he's a big fan like Tennant was and that's cool.

Capaldi, who won plaudits for his role as Malcolm Tucker in the BBC comedy The Thick of It, was the favourite to replace Matt Smith as the 12th incarnation of the Time Lord after Smith steps down at the end of the year.
He described himself as "a lifelong Doctor Who fan" who had begun practising for the role as a nine year old in the school playground.
He said: "Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can't wait to get started."
As the new Doctor Who was announced live on the BBC on Sunday evening, viewers were shown a letter written by Capaldi, then aged 15, to the Radio Times in 1988 in which he praised programme makers for their "excellent" Doctor Who special episode.
He urged the show's producers to make another "Special" in 15 years time to celebrate 25 years of "wandering in time with the Doctor".
